This is a long way of saying that before you can plan your trip, you need to first decide where you want.

Although there are many business goals that can be applied to all businesses and all situations, these 10 business objectives have been part of every business I have worked on.
- Keep a healthy budget
This is a problem for many entrepreneurs. I have seen many people start businesses with no financial plan.
A new term has been invented by academics to describe this type of financial plan. It is called a “budget”. And if you don’t have one, that should be your top goal for the year.
A budget allows you to track where your money is going and also allows you analyze things like which type of advertising works best for you.
How does your payroll expense compare with the industry average? Are you paying too many or too few in bonuses and commissions? Do you have enough funding?
Without a professional budget, you will be kicked out of your office without a second glance if you go anywhere to get funding (Bank, Investors or VC firms).
- Employ a certain number of employees
You should now consider hiring employees if you don’t already have them. The curse of being an entrepreneur is trying to do it all yourself. Although we all want to be the master of all trades, we forget that the saying “but master of none” applies.
Start by finding someone to help you with the small tasks that aren’t critical to your business’s success. To save time and energy, these tasks can distract you from the growth of your business.
- Reduce your expenses
Every entrepreneur should strive to run a profitable business. Every dollar you save on business expenses is an additional dollar in your pocket. Problems arise when you start to reduce areas that impact the bottom line.
It’s tempting, for example, to first look at payroll because it’s such an expensive expense in most businesses. Sales staff can be cut, but will it hurt sales? How about customer service and shipping? Although you might not immediately feel the impact of these cuts, if you don’t give the customer the experience they want, it will affect you in the future.

It should be possible to break down your goals into steps or milestones that can easily be qualified. It should be possible to measure the success or failure of your goal.
- Goal: To increase sales in Q-2 by 10 percent

Setting unrealistic and unattainable goals for your business is a recipe for disaster. If you’re a small business, it’s okay to set a goal of doubling sales from last year. Even if you increase sales by 1.5 times, it’s still a good goal.
Setting unrealistic expectations for employees will only lead to one of these two outcomes. It will either demoralize morale when goals aren’t met or it can cause employees to stop taking you seriously if this happens too often.
You might think twice before setting a goal of doubling sales each month for a full year.
