Hockey is one of the greatest sports there is, maybe even the best (I also love baseball).
As a Rangers fan all my life (Dad said he brainwashed me and my brothers well), I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in the Rangers organization.
First, I want to talk about Rangers and where they are right now.
With the Rangers on their way to the playoffs, we expect some exciting hockey. There is nothing like the playoffs, and with that in mind, it never hurts to think about the sport we love. Here are five reasons why hockey is great.
# 1 Fans
Hockey fans are amazing! There is nothing like watching fans of a hockey team and how they react to a game, goal, match, a bad penalty kick or a no.
I remember a time many years ago when I was at a New York Rangers game. I do not remember who they played or who scored the goal, but I do remember high-spirited fellow fans, complete strangers. It was great!
The way the fans come together in thick and thin is an incredible feeling. For a moment you cheer and celebrate with other fans. The next minute you bubble together. It is one big community, almost like family.
# 2 The players
I love the “3 stars of the game”. When I see a player give a puck to a child after his “victory” skate, it makes me happy. It’s so amazing to see the face of that child. He / she will remember that moment for the rest of his / her life.
It is also remarkable how the players react to a loss. The players know it’s hard for them to lose, but they also understand how the fans feel.
The players will tell you that they are disappointed and that they should have played harder, or that they played hard but just could not get things done. They know the expectations that are put on their shoulders and they own it, win or lose.
# 3 The plot
It’s not often I have said that a hockey match was “boring”, and that is because there is so much action in this sport. Although the final score of a game is 1-0, there is usually plenty of action taking place.
For example, the game can be a back and forth match where each team spends a good portion of their time in their offensive zone. I’ve seen it so many times where the Rangers would be in their offensive zone for at least a minute and then the other team comes and does the same.
Action can also come in the form of physical play. There can be many matches or battles and it can provide an exciting game, especially if hits lead to scoring chances.
I prefer a game that has multiple scores that are physical, but I have also seen great games that have low scores with a lot of action. It all depends on what is going on in the game.
# 4 Kampene
How many sports do you know that allow players to beat each other? Match is one of the key elements of the hockey game.
Fights usually break out for a few reasons, one of which is a so-called “bad hit”. If a player does not like a blow to himself or a teammate, he will undertake to go after a player on the opposite team. It’s just a matter of keeping up with your team.
Another reason to fight is when a team makes it awful. The team will struggle to get their fans more involved, which adds some excitement.
Fighting happens in other sports, like boxing, where fighting is what they do. Among the four major sports of hockey, baseball, basketball and football, match is not expected at all, except in hockey.
In hockey, if the players fight, they get penalties for it and usually there are no fines.
# 5 The playoffs
When the playoffs take place, anything can happen. This applies to all sports, but something about the NHL playoffs is different.
The great thing about hockey is that you do not have to be in the playoffs to play with that intensity.
An example of this is when the Rangers play against the Pittsburgh Penguins. These two division rivals do not like each other very much. It’s easy to see the way they play.
Rangers-Penguins play is physical, and push and push usually takes place at least once per game. match. The same thing happens in Rangers and Washington Capitals games. That’s what happens when the teams fight for the position.
I love the kind of games where the teams fight hard against each other. It would be nice to see this kind of play every game, but we all know that no one is perfect and there will be times when a team is not at their best.
Sudden death on overtime. Who else has this? I love that the league lets the players keep going until someone scores. I wish they would do this in the regular season too.
The moral of history
The whole point is that hockey is great. The fans, the atmosphere, the playoffs, the matches, the action, pretty much everything about the sport of hockey is amazing.
I know someone who feels that hockey is too violent and will not let his kids see it. It’s not just about fighting at all. Fighting is only part of what hockey is all about. There are so many other factors to it.
With the Rangers playoffs on the way, hockey will get a lot more attention, not just in New York. I hope more people, especially kids, just check some hockey out if they’ve never seen it. They will not regret it.
I just mentioned the things I love about hockey. What about you? What do you love about the sport of hockey?
