EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Austin Brooks often heard stories as a child about life on the West Side.
His grandmother and grandfather taught at Reitz High School, so they wanted to share stories they overheard in the halls that allowed him to learn about the Panthers’ culture and tradition.
Those anecdotes did not seem so important at the time. But more than two decades later, they broke into one of the most important decisions of his career.
Brooks was announced as the Reitz boys basketball head coach under Monday’s Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. board meeting. He is the program’s first new leader in 30 years.
“It was almost like I knew about Reitz before I really knew about Reitz,” Brooks said. “As a coach, you are always looking for advancement. When you have a school with such a rich tradition as this, it’s just not something you can miss.”

Brooks was most recently head coach at Boonville, where the Pioneers won 22-42 during his three-year tenure. He guided them to their first section championship appearance in over a decade and brought a positive culture to a program that has long struggled.
It was not an easy decision to make. He said he greatly appreciates Boonville’s athletics director Kevin Davis, principal Mike Whitten and assistant principal William Wilder. There are plenty of memories he cherishes.
“It was a great opportunity and I’m very grateful for what they’ve done for me,” Brooks said. “It was a difficult decision. I prayed to God and he asked me to follow my heart. That was what I did.”
Brooks always hopes to make a program better than when he found it. It was the same goal he had over the course of three years at his alma mater Day School, where he led the Eagles to a record of 31-37 and a 2019 section title.
He feels confident he helped Boonville take a step forward. Although the Pioneers broke the 9-14 record last season, there was newfound energy in the program. It’s momentum that Brooks is confident will continue even without him.
“We came in with a vision, a direction, and we made progress. We built it all the way from the feeder league to the high school,” Brooks said. guys to compete at a high level. “
Brooks, a native of Evansville, played Division I college basketball in southern Illinois under Matt Painter and Chris Lowery, as well as former USI head coach and then-SIU assistant Rodney Watson. He also played at Ancilla, a junior college where he still holds the career record for field goals, free throws and assists.
Brooks takes over Reitz after the retirement of longtime head coach Michael Adams. In 29 years with the Panthers, Adams finished with a record of 398-267 with 18 winning seasons, eight section titles and a race to the Class 4A state championship game in 2015.

“I’m very excited to go behind such a legendary coach who did such great things here,” Brooks said. “I know I can not fill his shoes, but I think the most important thing is to go in, take care of business and set some expectations.”
Reitz went 12-10 last season and will graduate several key players, such as SIAC Player of the Year Gavin Schippert. Still, it will return lots of talent.
Among them are First Team All-SIAC selection and leading goal scorers Isaac Higgs, Will Kirkland and Jayden Sanders. Brooks has high hopes for what they can achieve.
“These guys really know how to win and play the right way,” Brooks said. “They are really athletic and they can shoot the ball well. They have a variety of weapons. I want to build relationships with these guys and make them trust me. I know it will not happen from one day to the next. the other, but I’m very excited about the opportunity. “
He is eager to meet his new team. He knows it will not be an easy transition. Expectations will certainly be high. It only comes with the territory.
It is a journey that he is more than ready to embark on.
“I wanted to create something bigger than me and not about me. This is about the Reitz Panthers,” Brooks said. “I’m ready to go.”
