Norman, Oklahoma. – Oklahoma State men’s tennis team fell short in a close battle tonight against No. 33 Oklahoma, 4-3, tonight at the Headington Family Tennis Center
With the loss, the Cowboys dropped to 10-7 on the year and 0-1 in Big 12 games. The team also saw its winning streak of three games on its way to an end during the showdown.
The Cowboys were on track after collecting their 13th double point in a row for the season in the show. Lane three was the first to finish in doubles with Leighton Allen and Joseph Chen falls to Mason Beiler and Nathan Han, 6-2.
Next, Alex Garcia and Max Verboven was able to speed up and erase the deficit for OSU, whereby Mark Mandlik and Baptiste Anselmo in a simple way defeated 6-3.
Oklahoma State’s duo off Tyler Zinc and Seb Nothhaft extended their unbeaten double record to 5-0 after winning points for Pokes. The pair were able to fight a 3-0 deficit and won four consecutive matches to regain the lead. A back and forth match ended with an OSU route over No. 46 Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard, 7-6 (4).
Oklahoma were quick to separate early in singles play, scoring three points in a row for a quick advantage.
Lane three consisted of a match between Max Verboven and Mark Mandlik, but Sooner was able to win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to even play overall, 1-1. Leighton Allen went back and forth with Oklahoma’s Jordan Hasson, but Sooner eventually snatched the point, 6-0, 6-4.
OU’s Justin Schlageter was able to control the opening set against OSU’s Joseph Chen on lane six, 6-2. The Cowboy fought a strong fight in the second set, but could not keep up with falling, 7-5.
Tyler Zinc highlighted the night in singles, being the first Cowboy to claim a court case. The junior effortlessly dominated No. 60 Mason Beiler in a straight set, 6-2, 6-4, to reduce the overall deficit, 3-2.
Lanes two and four changed dominance during the night. Both courses were put on hiatus due to the weather and resumed on the indoor courses.
Goes a tight line, Alex Garcia and Alex Martinez kept the competition close to lane two. Martinez defeated Garcia in the opening set, 6-3. Garcia fought impressively back to best before in the second, 7-5, to push into a third set. Garcia delivered a show throughout the third, but fell short for Martinez, 6-4, to clear the game for Oklahoma.
Although the game was settled, lane four played out. Seb Nothhaft took the field against Baptiste Anselmo and was able to collect another point for the Cowboys, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-2.
The Cowboys are back at home this Sunday when they host No. 32 Tulsa.
