AUSTIN, Texas The No. 4 University of Texas women’s tennis team (16-4, 7-1 Big 12) achieved a 4-0 sweep over No. 52 Kansas State (9-11, 1-7 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at. Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns earned their 10th win against a nationally ranked opponent in the spring and completed their home court of the regular season with a 6-1 record at the Texas Tennis Center.
Texas took a 1-0 lead by winning the double point for the seventh in a row and 10th time in its last 11 games. The No. 32-ranked pair of sophomores Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins claimed a 6-0 victory on Lane 2 over Dinara Alloyarova and Manami Ukita. Chavatipon and Collins improved to 10-2 in doubles overall this season, including a 5-0 mark in dual-match action.
The first-year duo of Vivian Ovrootsky and Sabina Zeynalova got the double point with a 6-1 win on lane 3 against Anna Turco and Ioana Gheorghita. Ovrootsky and Zeynalova jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Turco and Gheorghita won the ensuing match to trim the margin to 3-1. Ovrootsky and Zeynalova won the next three matches to close out the match and move to 4-0 in doubles this spring.
Sophomore No. 3 Peyton Stearns opened single action with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory on Lane 1 over No. 120 Maria Linares. A 1-1 draw in its opening set, Stearns won 11 of the next 13 matches to close out the win and improve to 19-1 overall in singles this year, including a 16-1 mark in dual-match action.
Chavatipon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Lane 4 against Gheorghita. After 2-1 in its opening set, Chavatipon won five games in a row to close out its victory in the first set and then jumped out to a 4-0 cushion in the second set. After Gheorghita claimed the next match at a deuce point to draw to within 4-1, Chavatipon won back-to-back matches to end the match and move to 11-7 in dual-match singles play this spring, including an 8- 2 mark on lane 4.
Nr. 38 Collins closed out the overall doubles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Lane 2 over Karine-Marion Job. A 4-4 draw in his opening set broke Collins Job and then held serve to post a 6-4 win in the first set. With 3-2 behind in the second set, Collins won four games in a row to end his win and improve to 23-8 overall in singles this season, including a record of 11-5 in doubles.
The remaining three singles matches, with No. 68 Zeynalova (Lane 3), Ovrootsky (Lane 5) and freshman Allura Zamarripa (lane 6) was stopped when Collins closed his match. Zeynalova was on match points at 6-1, 5-3 when her match was stopped, and Allura Zamarripa held a 6-2, 5-3 cushion in its competition. Ovrootsky had a 6-2, 4-3 advantage at the time the match was stopped.
The Longhorns play their last regular season competition of the year at No. 21 Baylor on Saturday, April 16th. First serve is set for 2pm Central at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.
