Nr. 4 Women’s Tennis Winner No. 25 Kansas, 7-0

AUSTIN, Texas The No. 4 University of Texas women’s tennis team (15-4, 6-1 Big 12) recorded an impressive 7-0 sweep over No. 25 Kansas (13-8, 3-4 Big 12) Friday afternoon at 6 p.m. Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns got their ninth win against a nationally ranked opponent this spring.

Texas claimed a 1-0 lead by winning the double point. The No. 32-ranked pair of sophomores Charlotte Chavatipon and Kylie Collins earned a 6-2 victory on Lane 2 over Raphaelle Lacasse and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez. Chavatipon and Collins jumped out to a 4-0 cushion before Lacasse and Manyoma-Velasquez won two of the next three games to trim the margin to 5-2. Chavatipon and Collins held servants to close out the match and move to 9-2 in doubles overall this season, including a 4-0 mark in dual-match action.

The first-year duo of Vivian Ovrootsky and Sabina Zeynalova got the double point with a 6-4 win on lane 3 against Sonia Smagina and Carmen Roxana Manu. Smagina and Roxana Manu built a 2-0 lead, but Ovrootsky and Zeynalova won five of the next six games to take a 5-3 lead. After Smagina and Roxana Manu held serv to pull to within 5-4, Ovrootsky and Zeynalova held serv to end the match and improve to 4-0 in doubles play this spring.

Chavatipon opened the singles match with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory on Lane 4 against Roxana Manu to advance to 10-7 in dual-match singles play this season, including a 7-2 mark on Lane 4. Ovrootsky followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory on lane 5 over Manyoma-Velasquez to improve to 9-5 in dual-match single action this spring.

Allura Zamarripa won the overall victory in two games for the Longhorns with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on lane 6 against Tiffany Lagarde. After shining Lagarde in the opening set, Zamarripa faced a 4-3 deficit in the second set. Zamarripa broke Lagarde to equalize the set, held serve and broke Lagarde again at a deuce point to secure victory and move to 6-1 in dual-match singles this year.

After playing the remaining three singles matches to the finish, No. 68 Zeynalova got a 6-4, 6-2 victory on Lane 3 over Smagina. After 4-3 in the opening set, Zeynalova won three games in a row to secure the 6-4 victory in the first set. She then jumped out to a 5-1 cushion in the second set and crossed to the finish line to improve to a perfect 15-0 in dual-match single action this season.

Nr. 38 Collins added a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory on Lane 2 against Ngounoue. After splitting the first two sets, Collins had a 5-3 advantage in the third set. Ngounoue won back-to-back matches to level the set at 5-5, but Collins responded by breaking Ngounoue and holding the serve to end the win and move to 22-8 overall in singles this season, including a 10-5 record in dual-match games.

Nr. 3 Stearns completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) victory on Lane 1 over No. 62 Titova. Titova ran out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but Stearns won four games in a row and took a 5-4 lead. The set moved into a tie breaker, with Titova building a 3-1 cushion before Stearns won six of the next seven points to claim a 7-4 victory in breaker.

Stearns had a 3-0 and 5-3 lead in the second set, but Titova won three games in a row by two points to gain a 6-5 advantage. Stearns won the following game at a deuce point to force another tiebreaker. She jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the break before Titova won three of the next four points to trim the margin to 5-3. Stearns won back-to-back points to close out the match and improve to 18-1 overall in singles, including a 15-1 mark in dual-match action.

The Longhorns are hosting their final home game of the regular season against No. 52 in Kansas State on Sunday, April 10th. First serve is set to Noon Central at the Texas Tennis Center and the match will be broadcast by the Longhorn Network.
