Where do the MW teams rank next year?

The Mountain West basketball season 2021-22 was a lot of fun, frustrating, exciting and disappointing. Four teams participated in the NCAA tournament, which was great, but they all fell in the first round, so it was disappointing. Fresno State made a deep run and won The College Basketball Tournament, but Utah State lost at home to Oregon in the NIT.

The season was up and down, which is nice.

With the national title fight in the rearview mirror, and all major stores giving their first look at the top 25.

It will be changes where players become pros, transfer and just test the NBA waters and return to school.

In addition to the all-too-early top 25 rankings, we also take a look at the early odds for Mountain West. These are always a good value for placing a few bucks in hopes of hitting it big.

Below you can see where the Mountain West teams are ranked or not, and an explanation from each exit.

Heat Check CBB

25. San Diego State Aztecs

Expected lineup 2022-23: Lamont Butler, Adam Seiko, Matt Bradley, Keshad Johnson, Jaedon Ledee

Although the team has a few recurring seniors, its success will depend on Lamont Butler’s ability to succeed as the primary point guard with Trey Pulliam’s departure.

23. Colorado State Rams

Expected lineup 2022-23: Isaiah Stevens, Kendle Moore, John Tonje, David Roddy, James Moors

The biggest question Colorado State faces this spring is whether Heat Check CBB Third Team All-American forward David Roddy will return to campus. Assuming he does, the Rams have another team that should flirt with Top 25 advertising.

23. San Diego State

The Aztecs are the most consistent program in the state of California and will be led by Matt Bradley again – this year’s Mountain West newcomer. Lamont Butler and Keshad Johnson along with the possibility of Nathan Mensah back means the Aztecs will have the defensive ability to lock down again.

36. Wyoming

There’s a chance Hunter Maldonado will be back. He wants to test the NBA draft process. If he comes back, Pokes could become a Mountain West title challenger again.

World Wide Leader shuts down Mountain West in their top 25, but even the next five considered are not from the conference.

25. Colorado State

Assuming the Rams bring back David Roddy (19.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg), they will be positioned to outcompete San Diego State in Mountain West and remain in the national equation.

20. Colorado State

The Rams’ ranking is based on Colorado State’s top four scorers returning – among them Mountain West Conference Play of the Year David Roddy, who has declared himself in the NBA Draft but could return to school as there is no guarantee of , that he would be elected.

Honorable Mention: San Diego State Aztecs

With the news that 17 ppg scoring guard Matt Bradley is returning, it automatically makes the Aztecs a challenger in Mountain West for next season.

No. 21 Colorado State

The Rams turned out to be the one mid-major team without the name Gonzaga to play up to expectations and get a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Junior striker David Roddy (19.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.9 apg) won Mountain West Player of the Year and is currently testing the NBA Draft water, but the odds are reasonable that he will return one more year .

If that happens, the duo Roddy and Isaiah Stevens (14.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg) will once again have them in the top-25 row. And most of the supporting role is ready to return, including guard Kendle Moore, forward James Moor and John Tonje, the team’s third leading goal scorer from this year with 9.1 ppg.

Odds for the 2023 NCAA Tournament have opened, and as far as the Mountain West teams are concerned, San Diego State leads the list with +8000. Most, if not all, American sportsbooks will have odds available for the tournament. Keep in mind that depending on the site, the odds will vary for each MW team, so browse each team to find the best value if you intend to place bets so early.
